In May 1993, the United Nations created The International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia (ICTY). This was the first war crimes court created by the UN and the first international war crimes tribunal since Nuremberg and Tokyo. The key objective of the (ICTY) is to try those individuals most responsible for horrific acts such as murder, torture, rape, enslavement, destruction of property, forced evictions and other crimes, namely genocide. An estimated 20,000-50,000 women, the majority Muslim as young as 12 were systematically raped, over 100,000 individuals killed and more than a million displaced. The capture of Radovan Karadzic in July 2008 sparked the idea for this series. The work will encompass drawings, sculptures and installations representing the cases of all 161 indicted war criminals from the former Yugoslav Territories. The pieces are created using circulated paper currency from the former Yugoslavia dating to the conflict.
